SSB National Championship Update: May 27, 2008
The long Memorial Day weekend allowed the regional leaders to go all-out as they tried to create some breathing room over their second-place challengers. Some huge moves were made this past week especially in the West where a new leader emerged.
Sonny Tunstall from Houston has claimed the top spot in the West leapfrogging over both Kevin Bonney and last week's leader James Krull. It's still anybody's ball game as Tunstall leads Krull by a mere 47 pins. And with Bonney lurking in third only 231 sticks behind, it appears that this regional won't be decided until very late on Saturday night.
Bubble boy Pouria Amiraslani has a 77-pin lead for the 8th and final playoff spot.
There was no change at the top in the Midwest where Kisling holds a huge 902-pin lead over Chris Pioske of Minneapolis, but Ben Pilgreen of Brookfield Wisconsin is the new bubble boy in the Midwest. Pilgreen holds a 476-pin lead over Ozcur Acar of neighboring Sheboygan.
The Sunny and Sunburned Southeast!
Three weeks ago Joshua Myers led Chris Beverly by 69 pins. Two weeks ago he had increased his lead to an astounding 585 sticks. This past week Myers nearly doubled his lead and now boasts an amazing margin of 1,055 pins over Beverly. We all know that anything can happen when there's real money on the line, but it will take a true yeoman's effort for Beverly to take over the top spot.
A new bubble boy emerged in the Southeast during the past week. "Piano" Steve Dakin came out of nowhere to claim the final qualifying spot over Brian Schlender by a scant 91 pins.
The Naughty but Nice Northeast!
Ron Hammersley's lead over Del Flecker was cut by 300 pins during the past week. Flicker has Hammersley in his sights and now trails by only 181 sticks. Telly Rogers is still in 9th and now trails Joe Kostelnik by an imposing 560 pins. Rogers needs to make a meaningful move if he expects to crack the top 8.
The Pure, Pure Perfectos
The top 32 qualifiers have rolled an amazing total of 71 perfect games an increase of 14 over last week. It's a thrill to hear players – no matter how long they've played or how good they are – gush over throwing a 300.
Be here next Monday to see who's in and who's out as the final five days of qualifying decides who goes to Vegas and who stays home.
