National Championship Update: June 3, 2008
The 32 best video bowlers in the country will don custom-embroidered national championship bowling shirts as they vie for their share of $100,000 – the largest purse ever offered in video sports. It all happens June 20-21 at the Kingpin Suite at the Palms Casino Resort, Vegas' hottest hotspot.
It took 1 million games played on 10,000 machines in 6 short weeks to determine the final field for the inaugural Silver Strike Bowling National Championship.
And it came down to the wire.

The Midwest was lead by the overall top qualifier, Matt Kisling of Cedar Rapids. Matt's average kept climbing as he chased the top prize in a Club Lucky tournament running concurrently with Nationals qualifying. His average of 283.38 may never be topped and definitely makes him the man to beat in Vegas. Joining Kisling from Iowa are probably the two best-known Silver Strike players in the country, Mike Cornwell and Dan Bailey. Cornwell was the first to shoot a 300 and Bailey the first to enter the hallowed halls of the 900 Club. They'll be challenged by a trio of Wisconsinites all hailing from Sheboygan. Lloyd McFarland, Ozgur Acar and Shaun Goetsch will try to show the boys from Iowa their famous "Cheesehead Chop" shot. Sheboygan versus Cedar Rapids. Corn versus cheese. That's America. |

Rounding out the Midwest are Jerred Orf of St. Charles MO and Chris Pioske of Minneapolis. In the Northeast four Indianapolis players will travel to Vegas. This kegling quartet led by top regional qualifier Ron Hammersley, and including Del Flecker, Charles Whalley and Ken Carroll, expects to make some real noise in the Kingpin Suite. Fellow Indiana player Telly Rogers makes it five from the Hoosier State. Joining the group from Indiana are Bill Steitz of Canal Winchester OH, Jeff Broadbelt of Morton PA and Eric McCone of Columbia MD. |

The Southeast was an anomaly. It had the lowest overall scoring average of the top eight yet it featured the most qualifiers – 518 – nearly 200 more than the next closest region. Obviously the competition might not be up to the best of the Midwest and Northeast, but they clearly love their Silver Strike down south! Leading the Southeast was Joshua Myers of St. Petersburg Beach FL. Joshua will be joined by fellow Floridians Brian White of Varrico, Brian Schlender of Zephyr Hills, Wayne Allen of Tampa and John Piros of Altamonte Springs. South Carolina’s Silver Strike contingent is led by Mike Muse of West Columbia. Chris Beverly of Conway and Jim Hill of Greenville will both try to do South Carolina proud. |

The top qualifier in the West is Sonny Tunstall of Houston. Joining Sonny from Oil Town are Dayton Root and 3-time Golden Tee national champion Ryan Bourgeois. As top Golden Tee players, they've experienced it all and aren't strangers to the pressure of large video game tournaments. Tunstall, Root and Bourgeois make as formidable a trio as any in the event. From the great state of Washington hail three more Western qualifiers. James Krull of Vancouver, Jerry Day of Bonney Lake and the tournament's lone female qualifier, Ashley Young of Auburn. When asked how she feels to be the only woman in the field of 32, Ashley replied, "Pretty damn good!" Now, that's the spirit! The final two spots in the West went to Mike Dwillis of Queencreek AZ and Kevin Bonney of Omaha NE. |
