Mark Fow loves to relax in the afternoon at his favorite watering hole, Dietle’s in Rockville. He and a few of the other regulars like to play a couple of 3-game series of Silver Strike before calling it a day. Usually not much happens. It’s a quiet place – especially before the after-work crowd comes in.
But Friday April 25 was not your usual Friday at Dietle’s. This was SSB Sweepstakes Friday and like thousands of other locations around the country anticipation was high as 8:00 p.m. rolled around. Someone was going to win big.
The moment of truth arrived and there it was on the screen: Mark Fow was the winner of a $10,000 Costco gift card! It was hard to believe, but this retired FDA toxicologist had just become a hometown hero by beating odds of a million-to-one.
"Everyone has been great, congratulating me and making me feel special," he said. "I love this game and really enjoy it. The Costco stuff is just a bonus."
When asked about the location, Fow was generous in his praise for Dietle’s and the location’s amusement operator, A.J. Video Amusements.
"This is one of the last beer joints around and it’s a great place to relax and drink. And if there’s ever a problem with any of the games, they come over right away to fix it."
When asked what he’s planning on buying at Costco, Fow said it was time to turn in the old TV and get a brand-new big screen.
"We’ve been thinking about a home theatre set up," he said. "This will certainly do the trick!"
Did Fow attempt to qualify in the just-completed SSB National Tournament?
"I managed to get in my 100 games, but I finished 113th in the Southeast," he said. "I’m going to keep the $25 I won in my player account and just use it to pay for more Silver Strike. It’s not like I need the money right now…"
